I am a neurosurgeon-neuroscientist interested in the role of the basal ganglia and thalamus in voice and speech production. My clinical expertise includes deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and essential tremor, all of which can significantly affect speech communication. Our team created a paradigm to study recordings obtained simultaneously from the cortex and subcortical targets during DBS surgery, to investigate which aspects of speech are encoded in subcortical activity or subcortical-cortical interactions. Similarly, we are interested in understanding the effects of DBS stimulation on voice and speech production, with a long term goal of developing intracranial stimulation strategies that improve neurological voice disorders.
